Emmenidas, von Euchgewählt und zu uns entsandt als Arzt,seinen Aufenthalt bei uns in seiner Weise gestaltete, die würdigwar für Euch, die ihr ihn entsendet habt, und für sichund ferner auch für uns, die wir Euch die Art und Weiseder Wahl eines Arztes überlassen haben, weil er, unbescholten in allem,seinen Aufenthalt über fünf Jahre hindurch gestaltet hat, indem ersich um die Bürger und die anderen Einwohnervon Gortyn in ehrenvoller und eifriger Weise gemäß seinerärztlichen Kunst und seiner übrigen Sorgfalt kümmerte und vieleaus großer Gefahr errettete, und in nichts anFürsorge es fehlen ließ; und als viele Verbündetebei uns sich aufhielten zum Zeitpunkt, da wir Krieg führten, hat ersich auch um diese mit derselben Sorgfalt gekümmert und sie ausgroßen Gefahren errettet in dem Wunsch, unserer Stadt Guteszu tun; als er aber vor die Volksversammlung tratund uns bat, ihn in seine eigene (Heimat) zu entlassen, habenwir beschlossen, ihm aus den Reihen der Bürgerals Begleitung Soarchos und Kydon mitzuschicken in dem Wunsch,ihm Gutes zu tun; und wir haben beschlossen, Hermias zu belobigenwegen seiner Tugend und seines Wohlwollens für die Stadt; zu belobigenauch die Koer, weil sie einen guten Arzt und zugleich einen würdigenMann und entsandt haben; damit aber alle erkennen,dass wir Dank abzustatten verstehen, haben wirbeschlossen, auch das Bürgerrecht zu geben, ihm und seinenNachkommen, - - -

Inasmuch as Hermias son of Emmenidas,elected by you and sent to us as a physician,has conducted his stay among us worthilyboth of you who sent him and of himselfand further of us who gave you the powerto choose the physician; coming entirely voluntarilyhe has made his stay for five years caringfor the citizens and other residentsof Gortyn, and with public spirit and strenuously inhis craft and his general care he saved manyfrom great dangers, omitting nothingof devotion; when many allies arrivedat a time when we were at war, of these toohe took the same care and saved them frommany dangers, out of his desire to gratifyour city; when he came before the assemblyand asked us to release him to his own land, wegranted to send with him of the citizensSoarchos and Kydon, desiring to gratifyhim, and we voted to praise Hermias forhis excellence and his good will toward the city, and to praisethe Koans because they sent us both a good physician and aworthy man; so all might knowthat we know how to render thanks, we also votedto give citizenship to him and hisdescendants - - -
